Greater Houston Black Chamber Conducts Search for New President/CEO

Carol Y. Guess to oversee recruitment process, now underway


HOUSTON, TX – The Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce (GHBC) announced today its commencement of a nationwide search for a top executive to fill the position vacated last fall by Leonard James III. Carol Y. Guess, chair of the chamber’s executive search committee, authorized the posting of a formal job description on the chamber’s website ( and its release to the media.


“As we prepare for our 80th year of serving Houston’s African-American business community, we are compelled to recruit an experienced ‘commander in chief’ to supervise our operations, our staff and our financial resources. The man or woman who fills this position must have the talent, vision and drive to match that of our leadership and our members,” said Guess.


According to the posted description, the chamber’s president/CEO will oversee the activities of the GHBC, as well as the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The fundamental duties of this executive include, but are not limited to, communications, membership recruitment, community and media relations, and event planning.


The chamber’s executive search committee is looking for candidates with experience in all facets of chamber of commerce management, preferably with a bachelor’s degree. Training by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute, with the designation of IOM (Institute for Organization Management) and/or certification as a chamber executive (CCE), is a plus.  A minimum of five years of senior management experience is required, along with a track record in the supervision of staff, superior planning and organizational abilities, computer proficiency and strong written and verbal communication skills.


GHBC Board Chair Vernita B. Harris says that efforts of the new president will be fortified by a strengthened chamber, its leadership, and its members.


“We enjoyed a banner year in 2014, and the chamber is poised and ready to assist our new president with enthusiasm and resources,” said Harris.
