GHBC President Elaine Barber Announces Retirement

Today, Elaine Barber, President of the Greater Houston Black Chamber (GHBC) announces her retirement effective, December 30, 2016. She has had a momentous career in chamber service, 2 years with GHBC and 15 years prior with the Greater Houston Partnership.

“Elaine has served the Chamber well and we appreciate her leadership and guidance over the past two years,” stated Courtney Johnson Rose, GHBC Chairwoman.

Rose has plans to utilize a committee comprised of GHBC Board members to identify and secure the Chamber’s new president and expects the new chamber leader to be in place during the first half of 2017.

“We will not rush on this decision as the Chamber has significant local, regional and national momentum and identifying the right leader for us at this time is our top priority,” said Rose.

Under Barber’s leadership the Chamber refocused priorities to include membership retention, small business and entrepreneurship development and young professional leadership development. Barber exits amidst increasing growth of the Chamber’s overall health and membership. Her experience and skill set contributed much to these achievements.

“The Chamber is fiscally sound and has a dynamic and professional staff in place which will position them for a successful transition of leadership,” stated Barber.

Barber served as Vice President of Education and Workforce Initiatives for the Greater Houston Partnership where she worked on policy initiatives at all levels of government affording her the depth of knowledge and relationships to elevate opportunities for the GHBC.

“Our Board of Directors and members wish Elaine well in retirement and she will be missed at the chamber,” concluded Chair Rose.
