On January 30th, the Greater Houston Black Chamber (GHBC) hosted its 90th Annual Meeting at The Ion, marking nearly a century of advocacy and support for Black-owned businesses in Houston. This year’s theme, The State of Black Businesses, set the stage for an evening of reflection, innovation, and leadership. A major highlight was the introduction of Dr. Asheli S. Atkins as GHBC’s new President & CEO, along with the installation of the 2025 Board of Directors.
For 90 years, GHBC has been a steadfast champion for Black entrepreneurs, providing resources, connections, and a platform for economic advancement. As the Chamber enters this milestone year, the focus remains on growth, advocacy, and creating opportunities that drive long-term impact.
One of the most pivotal moments of the evening was the introduction of Dr. Asheli S. Atkins as the new President & CEO. A distinguished sociologist, entrepreneur, and advocate for economic equity, Dr. Atkins brings a fresh vision for GHBC. Her journey with the Chamber is one of full-circle success; she began as an intern and now leads the organization into its next chapter. In her remarks, she expressed gratitude to the Board of Directors for entrusting her with this role and reaffirmed her commitment to empowering Black businesses, fostering innovation, and expanding economic opportunities.
The evening also marked the official installation of the 2025 Board of Directors, led by Chair Carme Williams and Vice-Chair Donald R. Naylor, Jr.. The Board’s dedication to GHBC’s mission will be instrumental in shaping the Chamber’s future, ensuring it remains a driving force for Black business success.
Beyond leadership transitions, the Annual Meeting featured a thought-provoking panel discussion on Rethinking DEI. Industry experts explored the shifting corporate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, offering insights on sustaining meaningful progress in today’s evolving business landscape. The conversation underscored GHBC’s role as an advocate for economic inclusivity and equitable opportunities.
GHBC also honored McConnell Jones, a long-standing corporate partner and leader in business excellence. The firm’s co-founders: Thomas Jones, Ira Wayne McConnell, Odysseus Lanier, and Sharon Murphy, were recognized for their dedication to the Chamber and their impact on Houston’s business community.
As the event concluded, attendees were reminded that GHBC’s success is built on collective support. Dominique Calhoun, Chair of the GHBC Foundation, encouraged continued investment in the Chamber’s scholarship and business development programs, ensuring the next generation of Black entrepreneurs has the resources to thrive.
The 2025 GHBC Annual Meeting was more than a reflection on the past, it was a bold step into the future. Under Dr. Atkins’ leadership and the Board’s guidance, the Chamber is poised to redefine economic empowerment, strengthen Black businesses, and continue making a lasting impact on Houston’s business landscape.
