90-Year Timeline

Since 1935, the Greater Houston Black Chamber has been a driving force behind Black business excellence and economic empowerment in the Houston region. This 90-year timeline highlights the pivotal moments, visionary leaders, and transformative milestones that have shaped our journey—from humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of Houston’s business community. As we honor the past, we continue to forge a powerful path toward the future.
1935
Founding of the Houston Negro Chamber of Commerce
In September 1935, visionary leaders including J.E. Robinson, Chas. A. Shaw, R.O. Lanier, L.H. Spivey, H.P. Carter, G.D. Crawford, Dr. Pemberton, C.W. Rice, M.W. Jordan, Dr. W.M. Drake, and others established the Houston Negro Chamber of Commerce to advocate for Black-owned businesses.
1963
A New Home for the Chamber
After years at its original location in the Ancient Order of The Pilgrim building at 222 West Dallas Avenue, the Chamber took a major step forward by relocating to its own building at 2808 Wheeler Avenue, establishing a lasting presence in Houston’s Third Ward.
1964
A New Era of Civic Engagement
Under the leadership of President Mack H. Hannah Jr., the Chamber’s name was changed to the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce, marking a new chapter focused on broader civic and economic advocacy.
1968
Launch of the Business Round Table
On July 28, 1968, the Chamber held its first Business Round Table, creating a dedicated space for business owners to collaborate, share resources, and develop strategies for economic growth.
1971
Establishment of the GHBC Foundation
The Chamber established the GHBC Foundation, its 501(c)(3) Foundation to support philanthropic initiatives, community programs, and economic development projects benefiting Black entrepreneurs.
1994
Inaugural Pinnacle Awards
The Chamber hosted its first Pinnacle Awards (originally known as the African American Achievement Pinnacle Awards), celebrating excellence and achievement among Black business leaders and entrepreneurs.
1999
Earl Loggins Named Chairman of the Board
Earl Loggins became Chairman of the Board in 1999 and served until 2005, providing steady leadership during a period of significant organizational growth.
2002
Expansion into International Trade
Under the leadership of Mr. Val Thompson, the Chamber launched its International Trades Division, promoting global business opportunities and trade missions to Africa, Asia, Jamaica, and other international markets to expand the global reach of Houston’s Black-owned businesses.
2011
Launch of the Houston Black Leadership Forum
GHBC hosted its first annual Houston Black Leadership Forum, bringing together influential Black leaders and changemakers to discuss strategies for advancing economic equity and community development.
2013
Supporting the Houston Black Leadership Institute (HBLI)
In partnership with the founders of the Houston Black Leadership Institute, the GHBC Foundation supported the launch of HBLI’s leadership development program, dedicated to cultivating the next generation of Black civic and business leaders.
2025
A New Chapter Begins
The GHBC Board of Directors appoints Dr. Asheli Atkins as CEO/President, marking the start of a bold new era of leadership and innovation as the Chamber enters its 90th year and beyond.
